How does the Virtual ER work?

In hospitals across the country, emergency medical providers often treat non-life-threatening conditions, resulting in the issue of overcrowded ERs, as well as the larger concern of an overburdened ER staff that needs to focus on life-threatening medical issues.

A virtual consult with an emergency medical provider can solve those issues by allowing for a treat and triage of non-life-threatening conditions for a fraction of the time and cost. Or, if the presenting medical issue calls for a trip to the emergency room, the emergency medical provider will coordinate with the hospital to prepare for the patient’s arrival.

Keeping Non Emergency Conditions Out of the ER

Examples of conditions that UCM often end up in the hospital emergency room — but don’t require an ER visit — are suspected urinary tract infections, skin rashes, pink eye, upper-respiratory ailments, flu-like symptoms, and more. UCM’s Virtual ER is able to direct someone who is not sure what level of care they need to the most appropriate option for treatment, not the most expensive and time-consuming option.

EMS Systems Benefit from Partnering with UCM Virtual ER ...

When transport is not needed. Across the country, ambulance crews spend considerable time transporting patients who don’t need emergency services ... to the ER. And often, an ambulance crew must wait in line until those patients are admitted to the already crowded emergency rooms — and then journey back to their station. When an ambulance crew is managing a non-emergency call, system readiness for true emergencies is lessened.

By connecting patients with the ER. In communities where the Virtual ER is present, UCM can work with you to identify eligible patients when on-scene and connect them to the Virtual ER. Ambulance services can tap new revenue streams by contracting with UCM to assist our emergency medical providers by providing additional on-scene assessment and treatment during the Virtual ER visit.

Keeping ambulances in service for true emergencies. UCM’s emergency medical providers and Care Coordinators treat patients at home by providing emergency medical advice and reassurance, prescribing medications, and making referrals for additional treatment, such as laboratory testing, imaging studies, primary care appointments, specialty physician appointments, and so on.
